Jill Delucia & Karen Haun
How Long have you been commuting?
- Jill:
- Off and on, for about 20 years. It has depended on where my current job was relative to where I lived at the time.
- Karen:
- I started riding to work in 2007 with Jill on Ride your Bike to work day and she had to bribe me with homemade granola.
Why do you commute?
- Jill:
- Exercise, stop polluting, and for mental health.
- Karen:
- Exercise. I see deer and wild turkey look back at me instead of running away when we ride by them. I love to hear my teenage daughters tell me they are impressed that I ride my bike to work. I save a lot of gas money, The mini-van is a gas hog.
How far do you commute?
- Jill:
- Currently, about 9 miles.
- Karen:
- About 8 miles. Jill lives about a mile from me and when we can - we hook up at the entrance to my subdivision.
Do you commute all year?
- Jill:
- No. Why not ? Because dark and also slippery conditions make it too dangerous for me.
- Karen:
- Not year round. Too dark and cold for all year.
What type of bike do you ride?
- Jill:
- Kona/Jake model, a cyclocross type of bike.
- Karen:
- Trek fitness - black with pink trim. It is very sexy.
Do you have any tips for commuting?
- Jill:
- Use common sense. Make eye contact with car drivers. Assume car drivers do not see you rather than just exert your rights to the road. You can be "right," and still end up dead.
- Karen:
- Wear a helmet and lots of lights. I would encourage everyone to try riding to work. Maybe you can only ride part of the way to work and need a car for the rest. Assume every car is a danger, but let them know the road belongs to the biker also.
What gear does a person need to commute?
- Jill:
- Bright t-shirt, and windbreaker. Clear eye glasses. Always carry a cell phone.
- Karen:
- I have a huge BUTT LIGHT - it is 4X6 inches (I mean a huge light not huge butt)
